Topics of interest include the biodiversity, distribution, biomass, and populations of organisms, as well as cooperation and competition within and between species. Ecosystems are dynamically interacting systems of organisms, the communities they make up, and the non-living components of their environment. Ecosystem processes, such as primary production, pedogenesis, nutrient cycling, and niche construction, regulate the flux of energy and matter through an environment. These processes are sustained by organisms with specific life history traits. More broadly, it is the general analysis of nature, conducted in order to understand how the universe behaves. Systems theory is the transdisciplinary study of systems in general, to elucidate principles that can be applied to all types of systems in all fields of research.

Lockheed Martin Space in Littleton, Colorado, built and operates the spacecraft. NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama, manages the Discovery Program for the Science Mission Directorate at NASA Headquarters in Washington. This second image was taken about 6 minutes after closest approach from a distance of approximately 1,010 miles . The spacecraft traveled around 960 miles between the two released images. In the first downlinked images of Dinkinesh and its satellite, which were taken at closest approach, the two lobes of the contact binary happened to lie one behind the other from Lucy’s point of view.

The cancer likely started off as an immune cell that mutated, multiplied and adapted to survive in the water. A new study challenges a prominent evolutionary theory about why women live long after their childbearing years. Explore the process of scientific inquiry through our interactive Science Flowchart.

Plus, it’s incredibly difficult to bring a comet toward Earth, much less a whole slew of them. “It just shouldn’t be part of the discussion anymore,” he says.

In recent years, however, the comet hypothesis has lost favor. “It looks like comets are pretty much out,” says cosmochemist Conel Alexander of the Carnegie Institution for Science in Washington, D.C. Most of the comet water tested so far doesn’t match that of Earth’s oceans.

“”5 of Earth’s Highest Deserts Not all deserts have sand and they’re certainly not all hot. That means deserts are located all over the planet, including at super-high elevations. Roman poet Lucretius, intellectual heir to the Greek atomists, believed its formation must have been relatively recent, given that there were no records going back beyond the Trojan War. The Talmudic rabbis, Martin Luther and others used the biblical account to extrapolate back from known history and came up with rather similar estimates for when the earth came into being. The most famous came in 1654, when Archbishop James Ussher of Ireland offered the date of 4004 B.C. While granular cells of cerebellum is 10micrometers , sperm cell head is 5micrometers. Time is a relative concept with no absolute, and is used as a guide to measure events in various ways.

Some scientists are exploring other ideas that could theoretically allow time travel. One concept involves wormholes, or hypothetical tunnels in space that could create shortcuts for journeys across the universe. If someone could build a wormhole and then figure out a way to move one end at close to the speed of light – like the hypothetical spaceship mentioned above – the moving end would age more slowly than the stationary end. Someone who entered the moving end and exited the wormhole through the stationary end would come out in their past.

They found that females had a rank order, too, and that the stable core of the group was made up of lineages of related females, not males. The longer-term studies of Japanese researchers also allowed them to notice that maintaining one’s rank as the alpha male was not solely dependent on strength. Just because Earth formed one way doesn’t mean all habitable planets must follow the same path. “I would be cautious,” Nielsen says, about saying that gas giants are the only way to bring water to rocky planets. The same D/H ratio that exonerated comets is now pointing a finger at these asteroids.

At birth, humans are about 78 percent water — basically a sack of the wet stuff. To think of it another way, the work suggested that filing an old memory away for long-term storage after it had been recalled was surprisingly similar to creating it the first time. Both building a new memory and tucking away an old one presumably involved building proteins at the synapse. The researchers had named that process “reconsolidation.” But others, including some prominent memory experts, had trouble replicating those findings in their own laboratories, so the idea wasn’t pursued.

Every week, we’ll bring you stories that capture the wonders of the human body, nature and the cosmos. It’s Not Alone. The astronauts lost track of the bag while performing maintenance outside the International Space Station this month. The Times asked all 50 states how they police the use of valuable groundwater. Their answers reveal why the country is draining and damaging its aquifers so rapidly. The research, which comes with important caveats, was partly an effort to address the scientific uproar surrounding an earlier paper.
